Renewing Your Passport Just Got Easier

Is your passport expiration date approaching soon? The U.S. Department of State has launched a new online beta test program for passport renewal, allowing travelers to renew their passports virtually.

What You Need to Know:

Eligibility Only travelers residing in the United States with passports issued between 2009 and 2015 can renew online. Those wishing to change their name or date of birth cannot use the online service.

Photo Upload – Travelers renewing through this service must upload their own passport-size photo.

Current Passport Cancellation –  Once your application is submitted, your current passport will be immediately canceled, so consider this if you have upcoming international travel. Also you do not need to mail in your existing passport.

Fees

The cost for online renewal is $130, payable by credit card only.

Processing Time

The processing time is expected to be 6-8 weeks, not including mailing. This program does not offer urgent or expedited renewal options. For expedited service, you will need to make an appointment at a passport processing center.

How to Apply

The Department of State provided a helpful how-to guide and video explaining the process.

First-Time Passport Applicants

Don’t have a passport? No worries you can fill out the form online, print it, gather the required documents and fees, and find a location to apply.

Did you know there are “Special Passport Acceptance Fairs” taking place this month? These Government-approved locations, hosted by passport acceptance facilities, will hold events from June to July across the United States this summer. Most of these events are geared toward first-time customers and children.
